If signing in requires more than your password and an email verification code, that means Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) is enabled on your Hytale account. Hytale offers a couple of 2FA options: mobile authentication and passkeys.
What is two-step verification?
Two-step verification (sometimes called multi-factor authentication) adds an extra layer of protection to your Hytale account by making it much harder for someone else to sign in. It works by requiring two separate forms of identity: your password, plus an additional security method. That way, even if someone manages to get hold of your password, they won't be able to access your account without your enrolled security method.
This is also a great reminder of why it's important to use a unique password for each of your accounts.
Mobile Authentication:
Mobile authentication requires a time-sensitive code in addition to your usual login. These 6-digit codes are generated by an authenticator app on your device, such as Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator, and refresh on a rolling interval. Since the codes are created on your device and constantly change, your account stays secure even if someone else knows your password.
Passkeys:
A passkey is a secure, password-free way to sign in. Instead of typing anything in, your identity is confirmed using your device's built-in security, such as Face ID, Touch ID, Windows Hello, or a physical security key. Because passkeys are stored securely on your device, they offer stronger protection while making sign-in quicker and easier.
Backup Codes:
When you enable 2FA, you're given a set of backup codes that act as a safety net for both mobile authentication and passkeys. If you lose access to your authenticator app or passkey device, you can enter an unused code to sign in. Each code works only once, so store them somewhere safe and accessible.
Before reaching out to support, we'd recommend working through the steps below, as most sign-in issues can be resolved with one of these fixes. If you're still running into trouble after trying them, please reach out to our player support team and we'll be happy to help.
Locating Your Authenticator App
If you've switched phones, reinstalled an app, or aren't sure which app you used, start here.
- Reinstall your authenticator app. Many apps restore your accounts automatically through a cloud backup or account sync. Reinstall the app and sign in to see if your codes reappear.
-
Not sure which app you used? Check your previously installed apps:
- Android: Play Store > Profile icon > Manage apps & device > Manage > filter by "Not installed"
- iPhone: App Store > Profile picture > Apps > My Apps
- Check your other devices and password managers. The app may already be installed on another phone or tablet. Password managers such as 1Password, Keeper, and Bitwarden can also store authenticator codes, so it's worth checking those too. Once you find it, opening the app will show your verification code.
Authenticator Code Not Accepted
If you have a code but it keeps being rejected, try these in order:
-
Check your device's date and time. Authenticator codes are time-sensitive, so even a small clock difference can cause them to be rejected. Set your date, time, and time zone to update automatically:
- Android: Settings > System > Date & time > turn on "Set time automatically" and "Set time zone automatically"
- iPhone: Settings > General > Date & Time > turn on "Set Automatically"
- Windows: Settings > Time & Language > Date & Time > turn on "Set time automatically", then click "Sync now"
- Mac: System Settings > General > Date & Time > turn on "Set time and date automatically"
- Make sure you're using the current entry. If you recently switched phones or reinstalled the app, check that you're reading the most up-to-date profile rather than an older, cached one.
- Disable any VPN or proxy. A VPN or proxy on your phone or computer can sometimes interfere with how 2FA verifies your request. Turn it off temporarily and try again.
- Try a different browser or an incognito window. Browser extensions can occasionally get in the way, so an incognito window or a different browser is worth a try.
Sign In With Backup Codes
When you set up 2FA, you had the option to download a set of one-time backup codes. If you saved them, any unused code will get you back into your account.
- Look on your computer or any device where you may have saved them. The file is usually named hytale-backup-codes, so try searching for that.
- At the sign-in screen, choose the Backup Codes option when you're prompted for an authenticator code, then enter one of your unused codes.
